02 Aug PRE-WORLDS RECAP
The excitement is building at California Yacht Club. Forty four teams are on site to participate in the Pre-World Championship hosted by our neighbor across the bay, Del Rey Yacht Club. Nine international teams representing six countries joined the US teams that have been sailing here since early June. This regatta, and the days leading up to the start of measurement on August 7, will give the visiting teams the opportunity to gather some local knowledge, and sail in Santa Monica Bay’s challenging conditions.
Mark Foster, who will be PRO for the Worlds, led the race committee team for the Pre-World Championship. Many people on the on-the-water team volunteered for this regatta and for the Worlds, promising the competitors consistent, high quality race management for both events.
It was a perfect summer’s weekend. The morning marine layer burned off to sunny skies with temperatures in the low 70s. Saturday’s breeze started at 10 knots, building to the high-teens by the third race. Competitors welcomed the slightly lighter conditions on Sunday, with the breeze peaking in the low teens in the second and third race.
Congratulations to Bruce Golison and his team on Midlife Crisis for winning the regatta with all single digit finishes, including wins in the second and forth races. Chris Raab on Sugoi secured his place at the top of the leaderboard in the One Pro division, by winning the last race.
